The warm, Spring weather coupled with a few light breezes could not have been more perfect for the annual “Drive Out Hunger” golf outing at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. This event, which benefits Catholic Charities' food pantries, is sponsored by local businesses who support Catholic Charities' mission to provide service to people in need, to advocate for justice in social structures and to call the entire church and other people of good will to do the same. Lisa Perkins, Executive Director of the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the sunshine as well as her afternoon at the event and I was lucky enough to have a chat with her. Good vibes abound. She was very excited about the community response, as food insecurity is not something exclusive to any sect of RTP. This generous fundraiser will increase stock in 6 food pantries as well as a seventh opening in Durham. Attendees Tom Wilson, Wilmington St. downtown Raleigh, sees the event as a blueprint that may give shelters the chance to offer improved care for the homeless; and, Terry Shackelton, Oak City Cares, adds "cheers" for making it happen! This was actually my second visit to Prestonwood Country Club. My initial intro to the venue was during the SAS Championship where John Daly made his first appearance in Cary. Known primarily for his long drives on the golf course, this tourney actually left fans in awe of Daly’s fashion choices which included a hot pink polo donned with lime green patterned trousers made by American sportswear company Loudmouth Golf. See Daly’s SAS Championship fashion choice here: https://bit.ly/2VRE1QX #SportsFashion at its finest. Speaking of sports, there sure wasn’t any shortage of Canes' fans out on this beautiful day among the 160 golfers who supported the event which raised nearly $50,000 to support the six Catholic Charities food pantries across central and eastern North Carolina. Sr. Ranger Frank Florentino in his 21st year as Senior Ranger at Prestonwood Country Club couldn't hide his excitement for how well the Canes have played this year. And according to Scotty McCreery, Raleigh is definitely a "hockey town." A raucous PNC Arena most certainly can attest to that! All and all a wonderful, meaningful and inspirational afternoon!
PRESS RELEASE 26th NOVEMBER 2018 The British Fashion Council is delighted to announce that Miuccia Prada will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski. Mrs. Prada will be honoured at this year’s ceremony on Monday 10th December at the Royal Albert Hall in London for her outstanding contribution to the global fashion industry.
The Outstanding Achievement Award celebrates the overwhelming creative contribution of an individual to the fashion industry, who throughout their illustrious career has constantly shaped and reshaped the fashi on world through their innovation and creativity. Previous winners of the Outstanding Achievement Award include: Donatella Versace, Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, Dame Anna Wintour OBE, Terry and Tricia Jones and Manolo Blahnik CBE to name only a few. Stephanie Phair, Chairman British Fashion Council commented: “Mrs. Prada’s intuition for the zeitgeist and her blending of multiple creative disciplines including fashion design, art and architecture since the beginning have made her a pioneering force in our industry. I am truly looking forward to celebrating Mrs. Prada’s outstanding contribution to the industry on the 10th of December." Caroline Rush, CEO British Fashion Council commented: “We are thrilled to be honouring Miuccia Prada with the Outstanding Ac hievement Award for being an incredible design maverick and for spearheading the evolution of the Prada group from a family business to a global brand. We look forward to celebrating with her on the 10th of December alongside industry family and friends.” Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski Executive Board commented: “Miuccia Prada is unquestionably one of the most influential designers in fashion history. A true visionary, her dedication to fashion as an art form is endlessly inspirational. We are de lighted to celebrate her remarkable achievements at this year’s Fashion Awards.” The Fashion Awards is the main fundraiser for the British Fashion Council (BFC), a not for profit organisation focused on promoting excellence in British fashion and supporting the future pipeline of creative talent. As part of their continued and generous support of The Fashion Awards 2018, Swarovski has pledged a £300,000 donation to the BFC Education Foundation in advance of this year’s event. The BFC’s work is achieved through a range of charitable initiatives which focus on education, business and mentoring schemes that support talent from school level and emerging designers to fashion start-ups and established brands. In 2017, the BFC raised over £2.2 million for its charities and business support initiatives and in the twelve months to March 2018 has allocated £1.1 million in grants to designer businesses to support these efforts. Miuccia Prada has held the position of Lead Creative Director and Co-Chief Officer of the Italian fashion brand Prada for 40 years. Miuccia Prada took over the family business in 1978 and began work with Patrizio Bertelli, who pioneered the introduction of a new business model in the luxury industry, based on direct control of all processes, applying rigorous quality criteria through all stages of production. A business model that goes hand in hand with Miuccia Prada’s maverick creativity. The family business transformed from a small leather goods house into one of fashion’s ready to wear powerhouses. Initially with an understated industrial black nylon backpack that countered the idea of traditional, conservative luxury and onto a hugely successful ready-to-wear line for women, ‘a uniform for the slightly disenfranchised’. Through her unconventional observation of society and her maverick ideas, Miuccia Prada defines a product culture based on a creativity that is in a constant state of evolution. A free unconstrained process that enhances the DNA of each brand ensuring uniqueness and exclusivity. Miuccia Prada’s constant questioning and discussion of how to make a piece immune to trend for trend’s sake results in lasting pieces which reflect concept instead of trend and aspects of people, personalities and ideas. Prada debuted their first catwalk in 1988 to critical acclaim and cemented Mrs. Prada as a key fashion player. Since then, the fashion house has showcased womenswear and menswear collections in over 100 catwalk shows. These collections led to iconic campaigns from the Italian house which originated in black and white and evolved to high contrast and colour in the 2000s and have always featured the biggest models of the moment; Carla Bruni to Amber Valletta, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, all photographed by the best photographers including Steven Meisel, Glen Luchford, David Sims and Peter Lindbergh. More recently Prada released their 365 campaign taking a new direction with several narratives intended to place the high-fashion designs in realistic environments as opposed to a more fantasised setting. The campaign depicts office life, city landscapes and beaches. Mrs. Prada skilfully places design in the real world and the psyche of her consumer. The Prada Group has evolved under her leadership to include Miu Miu - Miuccia Prada’s “other soul” - a brand with a provocative, nonchalant and sophisticated attitude; Church’s, leading traditional high-end men’s footwear manufacturer; Car Shoe, footwear brand known for its iconic studded rubber sole moccasin, and Marchesi 1824, historic pastry shop, renowned for its exceptional contemporary interpretation of traditional specialties. The conversation between fashion and art exhibition remains a focal point for Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli. Fondazione Prada was born in 1993 to organize and support contemporary art exhibitions and several other cultural activities that collected international appreciation and recognition. In May 2011 the Fondazione Prada inaugurated an exhibition space overlooking the Gran Canal in the Ca’ Corner della Regina palace in Venice, of which it also overseen the restoration. The permanent seat of the Fondazione Prada, inaugurated on May 2015, in a former industrial complex dating back to the 1910’s located in Largo Isarco, in Milan, has been transformed and re-envisioned by Rem Koolhaas occupying the 19,000 sq. m that host a vast program of exhibits and cultural events. In 2016, the Fondazione opened Osservatorio in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II; a new space dedicated to contemporary photography. Miuccia Prada's pioneering approach also extends to architecture. She was one of the first designers to commission Pritzker Prize laureates Rem Koolhaas and Herzog & de Meuron to create Prada's "Epicentre" stores in New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Miuccia Prada’s achievements include the 2004 Internati onal Award from the CFDA; in 2005 Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world; in 2013, she won the inaugural International Designer of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards and the following year, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York dedicated to her–together with Elsa Schiaparelli–its annual exhibition, titled Elsa Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The generosity and commitment of our sponsors is more vital than ever. Please help us by acknowledging our Principal Sponsor SWAROVSKI for their support of The Fashion Awards 2018. The top-ranked Toronto Maple Leafs skated onto the ice at PNC Arena in Raleigh last night. Trevor van Riemsdyk of the Carolina Hurricanes was ready for their arrival and they were greeted with a lovely Holiday hello in the form of a puck through their net marking the first goal of the game in the middle of the first period. Carolina strikes first! The Canes couldn’t help but think to themselves on the ice that their opponents were currently tied for the NHL lead in scoring with 31 points, but perhaps the Leafs were thinking twice about their chosen trade selection earlier in the year. Facing his former team as the goaltender for Carolina, Curtis McElhinney was reserved when answering pre-game questions from the reporters. “At the end of the day, it’s a hockey game and as certain scenarios present themselves, good players take advantage of them,” said McElhinney who made 30 saves helping to send the Canes to a 5-2 victory on Thanksgiving Eve. Carolina continued to dominate the first period with a two-goal lead and 29 shots on the net. During the third period, Teuvo Teravainen assisted on a power-play goal made by Michael Ferland (and a broken stick for Sebastian Aho!) that put the Hurricanes ahead 3-1. “W.” Our favorite letter of the alphabet here in Raleigh. “W”hat a great way to kick off the holiday season! “For every angel fluttering through the skies, there is a divine counterpart here on Earth.” ~ Angels in Our Midst With a simple online search, you can delve into the extensive list of Angels mentioned in theology. Angels have always been a popular subject in very early art forms such as paintings and sculpture. The fascination with these celestial beings has no doubt translated into the modern Fashion industry which began with fashion houses run by designers in the 19th century. Shortly after the beginning of Fashion as an industry, a lovely lady named Jane Burden Morris who was a well-known muse of her time and model for many prominent English artists’ came to embody the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty. With the use of her long hair and features made somewhat more androgynous, they created a prototype “Victorian Angel,” which would appear in paintings and stained glass windows. She ended up marrying the poet and English textile designer William Morris. Roy and Gaye Raymond are another husband-and-wife team known in the world of fine art. The Raymond’s are known as the founders of the brand Victoria’s Secret. The hubs picked the name "Victoria" for the fashion label after Queen Victoria of the UK to associate with the refinement of the Victorian era. The “angels” came from his wife being in a sorority where their mascot was an angel. Adorbs! On that note, here are my favorite looks from this years annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (featured in Vogue Magazine) in NYC which ended its two-year trip abroad amidst the VS afterparty being shut down by midnight last year (WTH?!). When feathers appear, Angels are near … Adriana Lima’s last VS Runway show!

This is what Sumter Fashion Week promised, “Sumter Fashion Week will be engineering the global fashion experience and attracting industry influencers with a passport to arts, culture, fashion, and entertainment. Fashion is more than just the clothes, it is a movement, a feeling, and an expression.” Their promise was fulfilled. As a side note, when all of you Gamecock fans are watching Saturday’s game, just remember where your name came from. Sports and Fashion. A match made on (and off) the field. See website for more South Carolina Beauty tips - www.carolinaeyecandy.com | Latonya Franklin of MoodSwing Magazine had this to say, “I think that this will be the start of a fabulous thing for Sumter.” The final night of fashion week began at the historic O’donnell house. The two story Italianate design home, touched by renowned architect Frank Pierce Milburn, and its picturesque decor worked as the perfect backdrop for the evening of runway shows. Just the other weekend I was lucky enough to be Guest Listed for the private Press and Media Event for the kick-off of Charlotte Fashion Week. The party was hosted in the historic Uptown neighborhood (near the Bank of America Stadium - Go Panthers!) on the top floor at The Vue, the tallest residential building in the state. Although the line to get into the party stretched from the lobby all the way around the outside of the building when I arrived, the concierge did a wonderful job of escorting all of the guests up to the 50th floor in a relaxed manner. When I first approached the building, I was in awe at the luxurious surroundings as a few well-dressed ladies passed by swiftly, their heels clanking on the concrete while I overheard one of the ladies say to the others, “they had to deny us entry since it was a private party - we will have to be prepared for this the next time!” |
As I danced my way through the crowd outside I noticed a plethora of friendly-looking guests of the party mingling, swimming and dancing by the rooftop pool. Everyone was having a fabulous time! My main priority was to get a good seat for the Summer Seen Fashion Show for swimsuit and resort wear. So I scoped out the seen and ended up in this lovely cabana in the shade next to a stylishly dressed quaintrelle rocking the most beautiful shade of bubblegum-pink lipstick. Her name was Danielle and she was a HUGE fan of the city, and this was her third weekend traveling to Charlotte from NYC. We became great friends. Being able to relax with a Summer-themed cocktail created by SOCIAL HOUSE VODKA while watching runway shows from a poolside cabana featuring the latest Summer trends was simply an afternoon delight. |
It was also a pleasure catching up with Carolina Eye Candy’s Ivonne C. while we were getting to know Alicia Zeigler, the creator of #ColaFashionWeek. Everyone enjoyed munching on these custom Columbia Fashion Week cookies - so cute! |
